Summary

Parents must submit a letter of intent to homeschool to their local School Administrator and to the Maine Department of Education on or before September 1st  after the child turns 6 years of age. Or within 10 days of starting home instruction.  

On or before September 1st of each subsequent year of home instruction, the parent or guardian must send a letter stating their intention to continue providing home instruction and enclose a copy of a form of an annual assessment of the child’s academic progress.

Homeschooling in Maine must consist of at least 175 days of annual instruction. There is no hourly requirement, per day or per year.

Parents must provide instruction in English and language arts, math, science, social studies, physical education, health education, library skills, fine arts and (in at least one grade from 6 to 12) Maine studies. Children must also demonstrate proficiency in the use of computers.
