FAQs

Q:

Where and when does HAVEN meet?

A:

HAVEN has three campuses: HAVEN OG, HAVEN SOUTH, and HAVEN L/A. All campuses meet October to May with a healthy mix of indoor and outdoor classes. The original group (or "OG" campus) meets every Tuesday 10am-3pm in a wonderful space in Woolwich. The SOUTH campus gathers on Thursdays from 10am-3pm in a large space in StandisVEN Hh. HAVEN's third campus, Auburn (or "L/A") meets in the heart of Auburn with adjacent athletic fields on Tuesdays from 10am-3pm.

HAVEN puts an emphasis on our teens and arranges regular get-togethers for game nights, hiking, beach days, field trips near & far and other planned events throughout the year including a late spring prom and graduation. Our newest program: HAVEN HIGH is emerging as a dynamic and challenging teen-only community in the coastal town of Brunswick with easy access to Route 1 and meets on Wedesdays from 9am-3pm. HAVEN HIGH has had an incredibly successful fall with over 20+ teens in the program and a waitlist gathering for fall 2024.

HAVEN also has a summer outdoor adventure series for families and those beach days are heavily attended by our commuity. Workshops, support groups, book clubs and mom/dad nights out help parents stay connected.

Q:

What types of classes are offered?

A:

Enrichment classes are supplemental opportunities for families to experience learning with other homeschool students and parents. We have found that many of our enrichment classes tend to incorporate physical and/or hands-on-learning, creative exploration, projects and experiments, group discussions, and supportive interactions. (Our classes are offered solely as enrichment and are not meant to supplant the core parental instruction that is required for Maine home education instruction, especially in reading, grammar, mathematics, social studies, and science.)
Our enrichment classes have at least 2 adults per class – the class teacher and an assistant. Classes with younger children and/or more than 6-8 children may have more helpers, as needed.

Class offerings are dependent on what parents (and teens!) have volunteered to teach. Each 8-week session has a variety of classes for all age groups (ie: preschool to high school). Past sessions have included art (painting, drawing, clay sculpting, wool felting, sewing), theater, outdoor skills, cooking/baking, archery, math games, robotics, tap dancing, ballet, creative writing, ultimate frisbee, photography, psychology, year book, choir, entomology, computer programming, event planning, western herbalism, ukulele, chemistry, yoga, motion science, outdoor survival skills, dystopian literature, Spanish, battle bots and much more.

Q:

What is the age range of children attending HAVEN?

A:

Each HAVEN campus has a membership body of 20-40 member families annually (space dependent), with children ranging from newborn to 18 years old. Although we typically require that a family joining must have at least one child that is of school age (age 5+), baby & toddler siblings are welcome to attend and hang out in our nursery or participate in preschool classes. Occasionally we have space to allow preschool-only families to join- do not be afraid to ask! If you like would like to find out more information about a particular campus, please email: [email protected]

Q:

What does a typical co-op day look like?

A:

HAVEN members will arrive at 9:30 am to help set up our rental building. Announcements are held around 9:45 and families are usually munching on fresh baked muffins and drinking herbal tea. Two classes are held from 10:00-11:00 and 11:00-12:00, then we break for lunch from 12:00-1:00. There are two more classes from 1:00-2:00 and 2:00-3:00, then members put away chairs and tables and clean up.* HAVEN does not have "drop-off" classes on our regular co-op days - all children must have their parent(s) or other responsible adult at the building for the day. Occasionally we have two hour classes for teens particularly if they are held off campus- like a kayaking class, cross country skiing class or outdoor skills class.

*Please note this is a typical HAVEN day. Temporary variations may occur depending on the membership body's needs and energies at a particular campus.

Q:

What costs are associated with HAVEN?

A:

Annual membership fees are range from $200-$250 depending on location. This price is per family and covers the building rental, our insurance, website and other supplies needed to support a successful year.

Some teachers may also require a small fee to cover the cost of supplies for a particular class. Those fees will be included in the class description so you will be aware prior to registering for classes. Each campus keeps a well stocked art supply closet to keep class fees low (many are no extra cost).

Occasionally HAVEN campuses hold creative fundraisers and the use of monies raised is determined by the campus membership body.

Q:

How much of a time commitment should I expect as a member?

A:

HAVEN runs on the energy if its members. Families have many volunteering options to choose from, so all members can contribute according to their strengths. All parent members are required to volunteer a minimum of two hours each co-op day - teaching classes, assisting classes, monitoring the outdoor spaces and/or helping in the infant/preschool room. In addition, all members must help set up our space in the mornings and clean our space in the afternoons.

Preschool-only families are offered a little more flexibility in when their day ends because of the age of their babies and/or toddlers. If accomodations need to be made for a preschool-only family, just ask your campus' Membership Coordinator.

Q:

Is HAVEN a welcoming place for *all* people?
